I must say, Yorkshire in England is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. On Monday, February 11th our new friends, Martin and Teresa Wiles, took us hiking in the Yorkshire Dales to a place called the Gorldale Scar.
We made memories for a lifetime this day as Martin led the way to the scar where we climbed up the rocks and over the waterfalls.
Martin, Teresa, Darryl and I ready for our hike. Up the waterfalls and out on the moors of the Yorkshire Dales.
The above photo is looking towards the Gorldale Scar and the photo below is looking down the stream from the way we came.
The series of waterfalls coming out the scar are about 100 ft. High.
If you look closely you can see Martin in the distance and get an idea of the size of the waterfalls.
Starting up the waterfalls. There were two younger couples down on the rocks wondering if they could make it up the falls. As we started to climb they stayed back, I think they were waiting for us to die or something.
It was very exhilarating!
I felt quite young climbing around on the rocks.
From here we climb up the cut in the background behind Darryl.
Yes!! We made it this far!
As we climbed up to the top we can see how far we've come up this geological "scar" in the earth that was made by the glaciers.
On the top headed out to the moor.
These Dry Rock Walls are really amazing. Going through the style between fields.
Enjoy the photos of the moors.
Below is the remains of a wall that dates back to the Bronze Age. There are ruins of ancient homes up on this moor.
We walked a couple of miles through the Ewe Moor of the Malham Tarn Estate and then over to the geological site of a prehistoric waterfall.
At one time, thousands of years ago water fell over these cliffs much like Niagra Falls.
The views were incredible from up here.
We looked over to see a climber scaling the sheer wall.
We were standing on a 3 1/2 foot ledge on the edge on this big rock.
I am sitting down on a rock and stuck my foot out in front of me so you could see that it was close to the ledge. (Just trying to scare my kids a little and let them worry about me like I've always worried about them. 😉 )
The rocks on top of this cliff were massive!
But oh those views!
We got off the cliff by walking down the rock stairs...
It was just as impressive from the ground.
And the beautiful green of the countryside - I don't have the words to explain how glorious it all was.
Looking at the cove from a distance.
Martin leads the way!
A notice to hikers on the way up to the cove.
In the lovely village of Malham.
We stopped for a late lunch at the Lister Arms. A Pub and Inn that have been operating since 1723 (the date is in the plaster above the Highland Cows head).
We finished off the day with a stop for hot cocoa and cookies in the town of Skipton.
The beautiful day, the climb, the scenery, the company - we were blessed with a truly wonderful day!
