76 Hours in Scotland - Day 1, Arriving in Edinburgh

On Wednesday last, Darryl and I received word that our work on the project here would be delayed until Monday at the earliest. Not wanting to sit around for 4 days we decided to take our long awaited trip to Scotland.

The Blue X sign of the Flag of Scotland says "Welcome to Scotland".

The Cunningham Family comes from this part of Scotland. So as we drove past Lockerbie we made sure to wave as we drove by.

It was a beautiful clear day as we drove into Edinburgh and we were excited to be able to look out at the North Sea!

We checked into The Best Western Bruntsfield, just 1 1/2 miles from City Center. We chose this hotel because it had free parking, something very rare in this city, and it was a great choice! Beautiful, comfortable and our every need looked after. It didn't take us long to drop off our luggage start walking to Downtown and Princes Street. The hub of New Town.
Kilts for hire. It's what they do for Weddings and Proms instead of Tuxedos I guess.
AND....
right next to the Kilt shop was this fabulous Clock Shop. I'm pretty sure Darryl thought he was in clock heaven.

I was proud of him, he was only in the clock shop 20 minutes and we were able to continue our walk down Leven St. and past the Barclay Viewforth Church of Scotland

The sun was going down as we caught our first glimpse of Edinburgh Castle. The size and scope of this Medieval Fortress was immense, especially when you think of the lack of modern tools and equipment they used to build it.

This is the view from Lothian Street of the Castle.

And these last views are from Princes Street overlook the Princes Street Gardens.

The Ross Fountain is beautiful when lit up at night.

We found so many purveyors of Tartan items, Kilts, Woolens, tweeds and all things Scottish as we explored the New town area of Princes street and looked for souvenirs. Here are a couple of samples.
I love this Mug, and no, I'm Irish, not Scottish, but Darrrrryl is verrrrry Scottish! (See what I did there? That's me typing a Scottish burr. Roll those Rs people! 😉
Here's another thing I learned about Clan Cunningham. The village of Brig o' Doon is near the town of Ayr in Cunningham Country.

Now you're probably thinking, so what? Well, I'll tell you what. . . Way back in 1991 while living in Brazil, Indiana, I was lucky enough to play the female lead of Fiona McClaren in the theater production of Brigadoon. Little did I know then that there was a family connection. . . so to speak!
More from our tour of Edinburgh in the next post - Stay tuned!
