Our Days in Helena, Montana

Even though Helena is the state capitol of Montana, there is a definite "old west" feeling about the city. It really has more of a big town feel rather than a bustling city atmosphere.

Darryl took the opportunity to show me around the city of Helena, MT. The epitome of the modern western town if ever their was one. Below is the beautiful State Capital building.

He also took me to "The Staggering Ox" one evening for dinner.

They serve these delicious round, hollow bread sandwiches.

The following Saturday we drove out to "Gates of the Mountains" and took the boat tour to see the area where Meriwether Lewis and his men camped and take in the beautiful mountain scenery along the Missouri River in the Helena National Forest.

The views were stunning!

With Darryl on board the Canyon Voyager.

I don't know if you can see them, but there are petroglyphs on the side of this mountain.

Gates of the Mountains straight ahead!

The boat docked and hiked up to the spot commemorating the campsite of the Intrepid Explorers of the Lewis and Clark Expedition..

We also visited a memorial dedicated to the 13 Firefighters who lost their lives on August 5, 1949 in the Mann Gulch Forest Fire.

The "Gates of the Mountains" behind us.

There is also a metal sculpture and historical markers telling the history of the surrounding mountainous countryside.

That afternoon we came home to find our hotel hosting a statewide car show.

There were a lot of nice cars, but I think this one was my favorite.

Sweet ride!
